G&S IN THE NEWS...
BOYDS, MD -- Sarah Mulkern Phelps, the executive director of the therapeutic riding program Great and Small, has been selected
as one of seven women to be honored at the 13th Annual Toyota Tribute to Working Women Award ceremony. She will receive the
award on Nov. 13th in Washington, D.C.
We are thrilled that Sarah has received this well-earned and greatly deserved honor, said Board Member Mike Rubin. Great and
Small was her vision and through her tireless efforts she has created a program that benefits both children and adults with
various challenges, as well as horses that deserve new jobs or a gentle retirement.”
The award is sponsored by local Toyota dealers, WJLA-TV, 97.1 WASH-FM and The Gazette. Nominations came from family, friends
and co-workers who wrote an essay detailing the nominee’s contributions at work, home and the community.
Phelps, a lawyer and long-time horse enthusiast, created the non-profit Great and Small in 1998 after serving as guardian
ad litem for children in D.C.'s abuse and neglect system. Her intention was to create a program where therapeutic riding was
used to help children and adults with a wide range of emotional, cognitive and physical disabilities.
